From firefighters and paramedics to police officers and families forced to flee their homes, victims of the fires are multiplying. But these patron saints remind us that no one faces a crisis alone.
As devastating wildfires continue to sweep across parts of Europe, hundreds of thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes, while emergency services work around the clock to contain the flames. Across France and Spain, thousands of firefighters have been joined by police officers, paramedics, military personnel, and volunteers, with international crews arriving to support exhausted local teams.
The dramatic images naturally draw our attention to the towering flames and smoke-filled skies. Yet behind every evacuation and every rescue is someone who has chosen to run towards danger while everyone else is being told to run away.
Whether they are battling fires from the ground or the air, going door to door to evacuate families, treating the injured or protecting communities through the night, these men and women deserve not only our gratitude but also our prayers.
As Pope Leo XIV recently reminded those affected by the fires, our thoughts should remain with both the victims and the rescue workers facing these extraordinary conditions. After the midday Angelus on July 26, he said:
