Some hours after the twin-earthquakes that devastated Venezuela on the feast of the birth of St. John the Baptist, the UN's humanitarian chief, Tom Fletcher, assured that the global response has been "really good." Despite our era of so much war and division, Fletcher noted that "politics all falls away at this point."
Indeed, social media is flooded with videos of rescue teams from around the world -- from Israel to the United States to Spain to Colombia and dozens more -- finding survivors now even days after the quakes.
Pope Leo, in a meeting with the cardinals from around the world who are gathered in Rome, assured the attention of the world Church on the catastrophe.
“We assure our prayers for the victims, for their families, and for all those suffering the consequences of this tragedy," he said, speaking in communion with the cardinals. "We also entrust to the Lord all those involved in rescue operations, and we ask that the solidarity of the international community toward that beloved nation may not falter."

I wish to express my solidarity with our Venezuelan brothers and sisters affected by the recent earthquakes, which have caused numerous deaths and injuries, as well as extensive material damage. As I pray to the Lord for the eternal rest of the deceased, I reaffirm my spiritual closeness to their families, to the injured and to all those who have been struck by this tragedy. I also wish to express my gratitude and encouragement to all those who are working so generously in the search and rescue efforts.
