A cat in Mexico named Coco has been impressing people online after videos emerged showing him gently raising his paw toward worshipers as they enter a local church.
And naturally, some amused locals have already joked:
“Coco thinks he is the Pope!”
The clips, shared by Trad West on Instagram, show Coco calmly stationed near the church entrance, appearing to “bless” parishioners one by one with surprising seriousness and impeccable timing.

Part of what makes the videos so funny is Coco’s extraordinary sense of commitment to the whole affair. Rather than behaving like an excitable cat darting around the entrance, he seems entirely focused on his self-appointed role.
With purrfect timing, Coco gently places his paw on each arriving parishioner for a brief moment before calmly preparing himself for the next churchgoer. The result feels less like random feline behavior and more like a tiny animal quietly convinced he has genuine liturgical responsibilities.
The reactions from worshipers only make the clips sweeter. Rather than shooing him away, the faithful happily pause to receive their tiny feline “blessing” before continuing into church.
Animals have always occupied a strangely beloved place within Catholic culture anyway. From St. Francis of Assisi preaching to birds, to monastery cats wandering ancient cloisters, there has long been room within the life of the Church for creatures who somehow become part of the atmosphere of prayer, community, and daily ritual.
And perhaps that is partly why Coco’s little “blessings” feel so endearing. Beneath the humor, there is also something rather lovely about the sight of a church where even a cat seems entirely welcome, and actually finds his role.
Although, to be perfectly clear, the Vatican has not yet commented on Coco’s eligibility for the conclave!
