St. Padre Pio had a profound effect upon many people during his lifetime and developed friendships with a variety of lay men and women who would go to San Giovanni Rotundo for spiritual direction with the future saint.
Giuseppe Castagnetti was one of those individuals and he greatly benefited from the spiritual insight that Padre Pio gave to him. It helped him so much that Castagnetti is now being considered for canonization.
Pope Leo XIV recently confirmed the "heroic virtues" of Castagnetti, thus declaring him "venerable," which is a step closer to beatification and canonization.
All that is necessary at this point is the verification of miracles through Venerable Castagnetti's intercession, which would first lead him to be known as "blessed" and then "saint."
Who was Giuseppe Castagnetti?
Born in a rural Italian village in 1909, Castagnetti was raised in a strong Catholic family. As he grew older, various political powers were trying to de-Christianize the region and so he became active in the Catholic Action movement, which was aimed at preserving the Catholic religion in Italy.
By the time he was age 20, Castagnetti became friends with St. Padre Pio and would frequently go to him for spiritual direction. This encounter led Castagnetti to enroll as a member of the Third Order of St. Francis.
In 1928, Castagnetti took over the management of a dairy farm and by 1939, he married Giovannina Seghedoni. Together they had 12 children and when World War II broke out, he was dispensed from military service because of his profession and how much his family relied on his income.
One of his sons recalled his strong faith, "What I remember best about my father was his spirit of prayer, always hidden and always in touch with the Lord."
After the liberation of Italy, Castagnetti took on a new role. In 1946, he was elected mayor of Prignano sulla Secchia. The Vatican biography of his life provides this commentary:
That modest man, uneducated but rich in common sense, honesty, sensitivity, and intellectual capacity, took charge of this poor mountain town and quickly transformed it, so much so that he was held up as an example to all the other towns that envied him.
He helped in the reconstruction efforts after World War II and was seen as a remarkable leader and was reelected mayor on multiple occasions.
However, the political climate began to change in the 1960s and he resigned before his term was complete. This forced him to take odd jobs and he ended up in a state of poverty. He died unexpectedly on June 22, 1965, and has inspired many in Italy for his heroic life in ordinary circumstances.
