The Vatican adds the English cardinal’s memorial to the General Roman Calendar, marking his reception into the Catholic Church.

Pope Leo XIV has decreed that Saint John Henry Newman will be celebrated by the universal Catholic Church every year on October 9, elevating his liturgical memorial from local calendars to the General Roman Calendar. The Vatican published on February 3, 2026 a decree of the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, dated November 9, 2025, which formally inscribes Newman’s optional memorial on this date.

The feast day, previously observed only in the calendars of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri and of England and Wales, will now be available for celebration throughout the Church. In the decree, the pope emphasizes Newman’s enduring legacy as a scholar, preacher and spiritual guide whose “lively mind” produced lasting contributions to theology, ecclesiology, and devotional life.

Why is Saint John Henry Newman a Doctor of the Church?

“Doctor of the Church” is a rare title in Catholicism, granted to saints whose writings and teachings have made a profound, lasting contribution to the Church’s understanding of faith and doctrine. Only a few dozen figures in 2,000 years have received this honor.

Newman’s recognition as a Doctor stems from the eminence of his theological insight—especially on issues of:

Development of Doctrine: his influential arguments that Christian doctrine can unfold authentically over time without departing from apostolic faith.

Conscience and Truth: his insistence on the primacy of conscience and the centrality of truth in Christian life and education.

Integration of Faith and Reason: his legacy as a scholar who bridged intellectual inquiry and spiritual depth.

In proclaiming Newman a Doctor, Pope Leo XIV and the Vatican affirmed that his theological corpus continues to illuminate Catholic teaching and to guide believers in their pursuit of truth.

“His Optional Memorial be celebrated by all on October 9”: that phrase marks a shift from particular or local observances to a universal celebration. Cardinal Arthur Roche, prefect of the dicastery, noted that Newman will be listed in the Roman Martyrology and that bishops’ conferences will prepare translations of the liturgical texts for use in Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours.

The chosen date commemorates Newman’s reception into the Catholic Church on October 9, 1845, a watershed moment in his personal and theological journey.

This liturgical inclusion follows Leo XIV’s proclamation of Newman as a Doctor of the Church on November 1, 2025, at a Mass in Saint Peter’s Square during the Jubilee for the World of Education. At that occasion the Pope also named Newman co-patron of the Church’s educational mission alongside St. Thomas Aquinas.

Newman’s journey from Anglican priest to Catholic cardinal and saint shows a life committed to truth and intellectual engagement. Born in 1801 in London, he was ordained in the Church of England in 1824 and gradually found himself drawn to Catholic teaching. He resigned his Anglican parish ministry in 1843 and was received into the Catholic Church on October 9, 1845. He was ordained a Catholic priest in 1847 and founded the first English Oratory in 1851. Made a cardinal by Pope Leo XIII in 1879, he died on August 11, 1890, and was canonized on October 13, 2019.
