The exposition runs until May 25, providing ample opportunity for thousands more to participate in this historic gathering.

Alba de Tormes, the small Castilian town where Saint Teresa of Ávila spent her final days and where her remains are interred, became a focal point for thousands this past Sunday. According to Salamanca al Día, 5,600 people filled the Basilica of the Annunciation for the start of a rare public exposition of the saint’s body. The numbers far surpassed expectations and highlight the enduring appeal of one of Catholicism’s most influential figures.

The crowd included local residents as well as pilgrims from across Spain and even from other countries, showing the global reach of Saint Teresa’s legacy. For many, this was a unique chance to pay tribute to the 16th-century reformer and mystic, known for her profound writings on prayer and the contemplative life.

Miguel Ángel González, prior of the Discalced Carmelites in Alba de Tormes, expressed his surprise at the overwhelming turnout.

“We didn’t expect this,” he told Salamanca al Día. “The response has been spectacular. People are coming with devotion, respect, and deep affection.”

The basilica, which holds the saint’s remains, has seen similar expositions only three times since her death in 1582, making this a particularly significant moment for the faithful. Visitors moved quietly through the church, pausing in reflection before the relics, creating an atmosphere of solemnity and reverence.

With the support of 55 volunteers, the community of Discalced Carmelites has prepared for two weeks of intense activity, including liturgical celebrations, cultural events, and visits from church leaders. The exposition runs until May 25, providing ample opportunity for thousands more to participate in this historic gathering.

For Alba de Tormes, the event is an exceptional religious occasion, and a moment of shared history and cultural pride – a reminder of the town’s unique place in the story of one of Christianity’s most remarkable women.
