The role of Catholic colleges and universities in the “new evangelization” will be the focus of a symposium next week at Franciscan University of Steubenville, according to a press release.

Speakers include Bishop Jeffrey Monforton of the Diocese of Steubenville, Catholic University of America president, John Garvey, incoming Franciscan University president, Fr. Sean Sheridan, TOR, and author Dr. Scott Hahn.

The symposium entitled “The Catholic Higher Education and the New Evangelization Symposium” will be held from October 10-11, 2013 and will serve as the final event of the inaugural week of Fr. Sheridan as the sixth president of the faithful Catholic college.

Conference planner Dr. Jonathan Sanford, professor of philosophy at Franciscan University, said in the release that too often universities see evangelization and academics as mutually exclusive. “Indeed, in studying itself we are engaged in the process of evangelization,” he said, “so this community of learners can play an important role in the new evangelization.”

Bishop Monforton will deliver a speech entitled, “A Shepherd’s Perspective on Catholic Higher Education and the New Evangelization.”

Garvey will speak about the role Catholic colleges can play in the new evangelization.

Father Sheridan will give a speech entitled, “A Presidential Perspective on Franciscan University of Steubenville and the New Evangelization.”

Dr. Hahn’s talk on "The New Evangelization and Franciscan University" will occur in the evening on October 11.

The symposium is open to the public and those interested can register by clicking here.

Franciscan University of Steubenville is recommended in The Newman Guide for its strong Catholic identity.
